My buddy Mark is a huge train buff (ok, that’s actually a gross understatement), so when he was looking for a place to stay near Mt. Rainier National Park, the Hobo Inn in Elbe was the best option!
This is a super cool little resort – all of the train cars have been converted into comfortable little sleeping quarters.
After enjoying a meal in the dining car, we set out to wander the ground a little bit. Quite the picturesque place, and I highly recommend it if you’re in the Rainier area!
Oh, I have to tell you a cool little story before I sign off. As we were wandering towards the back of the property, I spotted a couple train cars that looked like they were from the old Royal Hudson – if you’re from the Vancouver or Squamish BC area, you may remember that train! Anyway, as we were standing on it and looking inside, Mark thought it looked familiar. Turns out it’s the same car we rode WAY back in 1992, and back then was called “Britannia”. And I think I saw the exact spot where I was downing hot dogs and bags of Hawkins Cheesies!
On some of these old Royal Hudson car, you can actually still see some elements of “British Columbia” painted on them underneath the more current “Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway” paint. Super cool!
