Funny story to start off this engagement shoot in Maple Ridge! Well… Not funny at the time, but funny a couple weeks after the fact.
We were originally going to Ashley and Cody’s engagement session at Kanaka Creek Park in Maple Ridge, against a classic west coast Vancouver sunset. I arrived a few minutes before them, and was VERY pleasantly surprised to pull into a virtually empty parking lot. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was incredibly weird for only one other car to be present at such a popular park, but who was I to complain. Every photographer wants to have the entire park to shoot in, uninterrupted, right?
Ashley and Cody arrive a few minutes later, so I got out of my car to go meet them. I had my car door open for a minute or so to go greet them, and by the time I went back to my car to get my gear, there were literally dozens of mosquitoes inside my car. Uh oh! Whatever though, I have more important matters to deal with. Like delivering on a kickass engagement session! I figured I’d deal with the little bloodsuckers later.
So we start walking along the trail, probably for only a minute or so. I swear, I have NEVER been devoured by mosquitoes that badly in my entire life. Well how the hell are we going to have a killer engagement session with seemingly billions of mosquitoes? WE’RE NOT. After this dreadful minute outside, we retreated back to our cars, and I told them to follow me and we’ll go somewhere else.
Oh right, the matter of dozens of mosquitoes already IN the car. I started it and rolled on out as quickly as I could, every window open and the sunroof down. Within a couple of minutes, MOST of the annoying little bloodsuckers were gone.
Ok, I get it. THAT’S why the parking lot was empty. The locals clearly knew some things that I didn’t. So, FYI, late June is a VERY VERY VERY bad time to go to Kanaka Creek Park!!
We ended up driving to Jerry Sulina Park, which is one of my favorite places to shoot. Great views of the Golden Ears mountains, a nice pond, so much greenery. And no mosquitoes!! (Hey, sometimes you gotta change it up on the fly, right?)
Another pleasant surprise, I recognized Cody from the gym, because we both train at West Coast Iron. I’d recognize that moustache anywhere!
