Mossy Cave
Ready for a short hike with big photographic payoffs? Mossy Cave in Bryce Canyon National Park is the perfect spot for capturing some unique and stunning shots. This trail offers a mix of geological wonders, a waterfall, and a "cave" that's more like a grotto. Let's dive into the best things to photograph along the Mossy Cave Trail and why it's worth every step.
Photographic Highlights
The Trail Itself
The Mossy Cave Trail is a short and sweet 0.8-mile roundtrip hike that packs a punch. Located just off Highway 12, between mile markers 17 and 18, this trail is outside the main section of Bryce Canyon but still part of the park. It's like the park's secret side hustle. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, making it perfect for families, casual hikers, and anyone who prefers their adventures with a side of convenience (especially if you grubbed down hard at IDK BBQ in Tropic like I did beforehand. Mmmm…).

Mossy Cave (The Grotto)
Despite its name, Mossy Cave isn't really a cave. It's more of a grotto that's constantly wet and dripping, thanks to a spring that seeps through the rock. In the winter, the water forms beautiful icicles, turning the grotto into a winter wonderland. The cool, shady area is perfect for capturing the contrast between the lush moss and the rugged rock formations.
The Hoodoos
Even on this short trail, you won't miss out on Bryce Canyon's famous hoodoos. These quirky rock formations pop up along the way, adding a touch of the park's signature charm to your photos. It's like finding a surprise bonus in your cereal box, but with fewer calories and more geological history.
The Stream
The trail follows a charming little stream for most of the hike, crossing it via a couple of picturesque bridges. The stream adds a lovely element to your photos, reflecting the surrounding landscape and creating opportunities for some creative compositions. It's like having a natural mirror on hand, but without the risk of seven years of bad luck.
There is a small waterfall here as well that is also worth photographing, but it was dry when we were there. Some falls just don’t like to run in the autumn, booooooo.
Mossy Cave is a hidden gem in Bryce Canyon National Park, offering a delightful mix of geological wonders and photographic opportunities. With its short, easy trail and stunning scenery, it's a place where every shot is a masterpiece. So grab your camera, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for some mossy shenanigans. Happy shooting! 📸
